Title: LIAM O'FLAHERTY'S ARAN COTTAGE, INISMORE ARAN ISLANDS, 1944
Note: Nicholls was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, the son of an English father and an Irish mother. He qualified as a quantity surveyor but in 1935 he turned to painting, in which he was self-taught. His early pictures are conventional watercolours, but later he embraced surrealism and other forms of abstraction, being influenced by Cézanne, Picasso, Klee and Miró. He moved to London and exhibited at the Spectrum Gallery. In 1939 he moved to Dublin, where he joined The White Stag Group at the invitation of Basil Rákóczi. He left Dublin in 1946 and took up religion and philosophy, returning to art in the 1960s. He died in London in 1991.
