Description
Inscribed to inner "Lt. Col. Pepper", commanding officer of the Royal Meath Militia. Rare. In 1799 the Royal Meath Militia moved into Connacht and was quartered at Castlebar. Thomas Pepper of Ballygarth Castle, Julianstown, County Meath, became the regiment's Lieutenant-Colonel on 14 June that year, and the acting commanding officer in the absence of the colonel on other duties. Pepper held the position for nearly 50 years. A portrait of Lt. Col. Pepper sold at Whyte’s – lot 124, 14 November 2009. Provenance: Descendant of Lt. Col. Pepper; from whom purchased by the present owner. Some rubbing away from badge, about fine.
