Description
Description: Military Cross, 1939-1945 Star, France & Germany Star, The Defence Medal, War Medal and 1953 Coronation Medal, to Lawrence Percy Orr (1919-1990), a postwar Unionist MP and Leader of the Unionist Parliamentary Party at Westminster. He also served as Imperial Grand Master of the Orange Order. His Record of Service, accompanying this lot, has him with the East Lancashire Regiment 9 March 1940 to 21 May 1942, Royal Armoured Corps 23 May 1942 to 2 June 1943 and the Household Cavalry 5 June 1943 to 6 April 1946 (with expeditionary force 10 July 1944 to 11 April 1945). 'Awarded Military Cross 9.1.45. 'It is believed the award relates to a Commando landing and seizing of Walcheren, Flushing. Also with this lot a 3 drawer telescope - no maker's name - believed to have been used by Captain Orr during the war.
Note: At his funeral in 1990 the family of Captain Orr were introduced to the heads of MI6 and MI5 who told them he had worked for them all his life, including while an MP. During World War II he was dropped into German occupied France in 1940 and 1944. A 1953 letter to Orr from a 'liaison agent' in France is included in this lot..He was transferred to the Household Cavalry as a personal guard for Princess Elizabeth while he was operating for MI5. He escorted Princess Elizabeth as she walked through the crowds on VE Day in London.
