Description: Fascinating file of documents discovered in Carlow Jail in the 1940s consisting of notices, pleas for mercy, petitions, appeals, affidavits, memorial and calendars (lists) of prisoners all relating to the jail or Marshalsea in Carlow.
Note: Includes - Notice of Surrender to the High Sheriff of Carlow from John McGrath concerning " the alleged murder of Thomas Hall of Ballybar". Dated July 1810. Certified by Robert Kirwan, Governor of the Jail and served by Henry Ryan on the widow and the mother of Thomas Hall.1802 Recommendation for Mercy for Elizabeth Quin "now a Convict" in consideration of her small and helpless family and "Excellent Character " Signed by LaTouche. Recommendation "as fit objects of mercy" that Garrett Kavanagh and John Malone and James Kirwan convicted of stealing sheep and a heifer be transported. Signed by Thomas Bunbury. Pleas for Mercy from John Doherty "now under sentence of Death" ? and also from Michael Flaherty "convicted of Cow Stealing" both men possibly seeking to be transported. Signed by William Burton. Memorial signed by Lovenda Kirwan, Matron over the female prisoners. Statement signed by Thomas McDowell, Keeper of the Jail in 1818 regarding identifying a prisoner in the Felons Yard who was wanted in Cork.Notice on valuing property for the purpose of enlarging the Jail.Deposition sworn before magistrate Robert Durdin by John Farrell naming prisoner John Stedman as the murderer of his brother.Signed statement dated 1787 addressed to John Lahee, Keeper of the Jail, requesting detention in jail of Margaret Nowlan for passing 14 fake English shillings.Three Calendars of prisoners 1805-1811 detailing names and crimes committed, signed by Robert Kirwan, Jailer. Along with some other documents detailing Petitions etc.This is the final batch of documents from this archive, most of which was sold through Whyte's over the last few years.
