Description
Title: MOTHER IRELAND, 1989
Note: This painting was a central image in my first solo exhibition after the completion of my MA and the birth of my first son. The central female figure has her arms filled with children and a smoothing iron worn as a head garment is firmly plugged into the church mains, removing any possibility of wrinkled thinking. Like most of my work it is personal and political, it stands as feminist comment on the lives Irish women lived and the prowling bishops who were intent on keeping it that way. This painting has been exhibited internationally and well documented as an important work in Irish contemporary art, sited by art historians' essays and reproduced in numerous publications.Rita DuffySeptember 2023
