Note: Dennis Malone Carter was born in Ireland in 1827. He accompanied his parents to the USA in 1839 and, having received a little instruction in art, he began his career as a portrait painter and travelled over a large part of the country in pursuit of his profession. He eventually settled in New York and produced portraits and paintings of historical settings. In 1850 he painted a series of works illustrating Oliver Goldsmith's poem 'The Deserted Village', this lot being one example. He was one of the original members of the Artists' Fund Society, which was established in 1859.
