Description
Title: ORBY - WINNER OF ENGLISH AND IRISH DERBIES, 1907
Frame dimensions: 16.5 by 18.25in. (41.9 by 46.4cm)
Note: At one time “as famous as Arkle”, Orby was the first Irish-trained horse to win the Epsom Derby and to run in the Irish equivalent in 1907. He was owned by Richard Croker (1841-1922), the so-called “Boss” of Tammany Hall in New York. Croker left America in disgust at the election of a reform ticket mayor, taking with him to England his valuable stable of race horses. However, the English Jockey Club refused Croker permission to train his horses at Newmarket, thus he uprooted once more and settled in his native Ireland, at Glencairn in Cabinteely, Co. Dublin, from where he went on to make horse-racing history.
