Description: Original ink and watercolour drawing. With a mock inscription "Publd. April 6th by Ludivico Scratchi, 1802". A drawing of Richard Brinsley Sheridan seated at a desk on which are various letters from actors calling to be paid. A dishevelled actor stands in front of Sheridan pointing at him with his left hand. He holds a tricorne hat in his right hand. a scarce original drawing by Rowlandson. Engraved: cf. Note: Richard Brinsley Butler Sheridan (1751-1816) was an Irish satirist, playwright and poet, and long-term owner of the Theatre Royal, London. He is known for his plays including The Rivals, The School for Scandal, The Duenna and A Trip to Scarborough. He was also a Whig MP for 32 years in the British House of Commons for Stafford (1780–1806), Westminster (1806–1807), and Ilchester (1807–1812). He is buried at Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. His plays are still regularly performed worldwide.
