Title: AN ANTHEM FOR THE KING
Note: Sheet size: 19 by 12.75in. This artwork was part of the response of several of the finest visual artists in Ireland to a selection of stories/essays in the anthology: From the Republic Conscience (Liberty Press, 2009).Alan Clarke has responded to Kevin Barry’s surreal take on Article 28, An Anthem for the King. In the story all redheads, citógs and anyone who can’t pronounce their “R’s” is being rounded up and sent to the swamp. Alan’s drawing is inspired by the line “At this moment, under Grandma’s skirts, Wee Frankie has a crayon clamped in his wee left mitt and was scrawling free verse on the floor.”
