He lived in Sydney for five years then moved to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, where he was artist-in-residence at the National College of Art. His first solo exhibition was held in Sydney, at the Coventry Gallery (1977). Since then Doherty has shown his work widely in solo and group exhibitions in both Ireland and Australia, most recently in Disconnect, a three-person exhibition at Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre (2015). He continues to be represented by the Taylor Galleries in Dublin and his work can be found in numerous private collections in Ireland, Australia, America and Europe, and also features in the public collections of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Institute of Modern Art, Chicago; Irish National Stud; IMMA; AIB Dublin and London; and Artbank, Sydney.
