Description
Title: DALKEY ISLAND FROM COLIEMORE HARBOUR, COUNTY DUBLIN
Note: Terence John McCaw was an important figure within the Cape Impressionist movement in the early to mid-20th century in South Africa, which saw European trained painters seeking a new way to depict the landscapes of their native country. After his studies at the Wits Technical Art School, Johannesburg in the early 1930s, McCaw studied at Heatherley's School of Fine Art and the Central School of Art in London in 1935 with his South African contemporaries, Freida Lock and Gregoire Boonzaier. The three artists participated in exhibitions with the London Group, and, once back in Cape Town, became founding members of the New Group in 1937. The New Group served as a forum for young South African artists for almost 15 years, presenting exhibitions throughout the country and providing rural communities with a taste of new artistic trends. It is not known when McCaw visited Ireland, but it is likely to have been circa 1935 when he was in London.
Frame dimensions: 27 by 31in. (68.6 by 78.7cm)
