Description
Title: A LA SOURCE D'ARA: ÉPOPÉE ACCOMPAGNÉE DE VINGT-CINQ AQUARELLES D'IRLANDE, 1934
Note: Foreword by Stephen Gwynn. Limited Edition. Number 15 of 125 Copies. Signed by the Artist. [Paris], Duclos et Colas, 1934. Oblong Folio. Unnumbered text pages with elegantly designed text. Various black and white Illustrations, including a Map of Ireland and 25 fine full page pochoir plates executed by Jean Saude after artwork by Marie Howet; with the original tissue guards. Includes a loosely inserted broadside printing in French of a letter to Marie Howet the artist and author of the book when it came out, from Seamus Mac Call, the author of 'And So Began the Irish Nation'. Signed and numbered (15) by Marie Howitt on the limitation page. Also includes the artist's original aluminium stencil plates and accompanying photograph of her artwork to rear. Housed in original paper covered boards with green spine. Upper board beautifully decorated. In original green slipcase with embossed black and white decoration. Marie Howet travelled frequently abroad, including a visit to Ireland in the mid-1920s with a solo show of her work held in the Gresham Hotel in Dublin 1927. It is thought that Drogheda artist Nano Reid was influenced by a visit to an exhibition of the Belgian artist's work in 1937 encouraging her own boldly linear, highly subjective mode of representation.
