Description
Title: STRANDED VESSELS, BRAY, COUNTY WICKLOW, 1877
Note: The two ships depicted belonged to the Cuthbert family who ran a shipping company in Bray. The blue ensign on the first boat indicates the ship is due to sail within an hour. These ships would land on the strand of Bray and off load their cargo and wait for the next high tide to refloat. The Cuthbert family came from the Clifton area of Bristol. One of Richard Cuthbert relations was called George Seignelay Cuthbert born on 20 January 1840 and died on 14 December 1918. He was an amateur artist and landed gentleman. We are grateful to the Bray Cualann Historical Society for the additional information on this lot.
