Note: Dimensions of base: 10 by 10 by 10in.An adaptation of Edward Smyth's River-Godkeystone depiction on the East facade of Dublin'sCustom House, This mask rendition has a rathersad visage with deeply shadowed eyes. Over thebrows are dripping river weeds and a multitude ofsmall fishes while crowning the whole is a basketpiled high with round fruits, dimpled on one face,apparently apples. No part of Ireland was sonotable for apple culture in the eighteen century asthe upper valley of the Munster Blackwater. InCharles Smith's History of Waterford (1746) hestates that..." in the west of this county...our eiderhas of later years been brought to great perfection;and besides enough for our own consumption,some hundred hogsheads are yearly, in good fruitseasons, sent by sea to Dublin and other places."
