Title: NIGHT CIRCUS
Note: George Campbell was born in Wicklow, in 1917 but moved with his family at an early age to Belfast. He dedicated himself to painting full-time from the age of 26 and married his wife Madge the following year. Around 1944 he met fellow Belfast artist Gerard Dillon and they held their first joint exhibition. Their lives and careers became intertwined from this point forward. The present work was a Christmas gift from Dillon to George and Madge Campbell. Although undated, the present work must be from the late 1950s at which time Dillon began to incorporate sand into his paintings.In 1960 Dillon represented Ireland at the Guggenheim International with a similiar sand and oil painting.
