Title: STILL LIFE WITH BOTTLES, 1964
Note: Arthur Armstrong RHA first exhibited at the Grafton Gallery in 1950. Moving from London to Dublin in 1962, he shared a house with Gerard Dillon in Ranelagh. He first exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1962, giving the Ritchie Hendricks Gallery as his address, up until 1995. He contributed a total of seventy-four works there.From his studio in Parliament Street, Armstrong began to incorporate raised plaster into his still life and landscapes. Many of these were exhibited at his CEMA exhibition in 1961. The success of his first solo show at Hendriks in 1963, where he sold twenty-six paintings, was an indication of a new economic optimism in Ireland.In 1968, Gerard Dillon and Arthur Armstrong purchased a house together at Chelmsford Avenue, Ranelagh. Dillon experimented with abstraction and various medium - sand, plaster, Collage. While both artists shared a studio in Chelmsford Avenue Arthur Armstrong used the same medium of plaster and used the same still life heads and objects that were in the house.His paintings from the late 1950s moved towards an abstract style, more concerned with a play of textures and an interlocking of quantities and areas of colour. He was a prolific artist and his distinctive style of using plaster on large works is easily identifiable.
